The Surfrider Foundation’s Delaware and Ocean City Chapters came together to clean up the State Line Beach bordering Delaware and Maryland on Saturday, May 22.
Volunteers from both states met on Bunting Avenue in Fenwick Island and performed 2 cleanups--Delaware cleaned north and the Maryland folks headed south of the state line border. The cleanup event was in memory of Dominic Ragni, a Delaware Surfrider Foundation chapter leader who generously donated his time and efforts to help keep our environment clean.
A special emphasis was placed on collecting Styrofoam to illustrate the extent of which polystyrene pollutes Delaware beaches to help encourage state legislators to get behind a polystyrene ban. So far this year, Surfrider Delaware has collected over 325 foam fragments from the beaches, bays, and the Assawoman Canal Trail that would have otherwise washed out to sea and potentially harmed wildlife.
