INDIAN RIVER INLET — Representatives of the Delaware chapters of Surfrider and the Sierra Club joined forces to celebrate Hands Across the Sand at Indian River Inlet May 16. The local event was part of a nationwide day-of-action effort. The focus was to show a united front against new offshore drilling and to promote clean energy.

In January, President Barack Obama announced offshore drilling will be allowed in the waters off the southeastern United States, The president’s proposal calls for opening the coastline areas of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia to oil leasing.

In addition to raising awareness, members of the two groups also spent about an hour picking up debris from the beach.
