Goal: Prevent SB 222 and HB 242, which would prohibit local governments in Ohio from enacting bans or fee-based ordinances on "auxiliary containers" such as plastic bags, foam takeout containers, and more.
The Ohio House and Senate were considering bills that would take away the authority of local governments in the state to enact ordinances to curb the distribution of “auxiliary containers”—including carryout bags, foam takeout containers, cans, bottles, cups, and more—through the use of fees or bans. Surfrider Foundation Northern Ohio worked with allies to advocate against these bills in the state legislature, but unfortunately one of the bills—HB 242—was signed into law. Luckily, the bill was amended to sunset after a 12 month period.
These bills followed on the heels of similar bills contemplated in the last state legislative session. Those bills did not pass into law.
